OIA 2011

Greetings from The President

30 May 2011

Dear Old Ilminsterians,

As my presidential year draws to a close, I am delighted to report on some recent highlights:

The second `Get your own back` walk was a great success, and a great day out. This time, we walked through Dillington Park, Whitelackington, Long Ponds and Kingston, before arriving at Dowlish Wake for a well-earned lunch at PerrysCiderMills.

All agreed that, had Bruce Lang included a cider stop in our Cross Country Runs, we would have all run more enthusiastically.

We then visited the delightful church in Dowlish Wake, to pay homage to John Hanning Speke, who discovered the source of the Nile. This was of particular interest to me, as I had attended the centenary celebrations at the Speke family home of Jordans, in 1962, and later had visited Uganda, staying in The Speke Hotel in Kampala and visiting the Source of the Nile, near Ginja. From the church, we headed back to Ilminster via Moolham (photos) and were cheered on our way by a trio of Alpaca.

Dreams do come true - I was a guest at The Old Girls Reunion lunch at Broadway Village Hall: me, Pat Bilyard, a glass of wine and - 73 girls. After the meal, some of the girls gave very interesting presentations about the skills they learned whilst at school - apparently, they had to learn how to make their own knickers.

I had to take a photo to make certain that I had not imagined this!

I look forward to seeing everyone at this year`s Reunion, on Saturday 9th. July, - a very special one, as it will mark the 40th anniversary of the closure of the school. We have an outstanding speaker to mark the occasion - hope to see you there.

Brian Willett, 30May11
